The Fiorucci Palm Tree lamp by Targetti Sankey

Sat May 14th 2020

I have always liked that huge 36' palm tree lamp marked Fiorucci.

Both palms have a pattern looking like Ettore Sottsass's 'Bacterio'. It has a 'Fiorucci' logo and a 'Targetti Sankey' manufacturer's mark.

The legend goes:

“only 5 were made for a Fiorucci store”

Beautiful story! But the Sottsass attribution always seemed phony. Sottsass is never so literal, but at the same time, like every master, he had many periods and I don’t know all Sottsass works (I can be wrong).

When you ask the seller for documentation they never have anything and quickly share auction results where the lamp was sold as “Ettore Sottsass for Fiorrucci.” I went through the many auctions results but there again not one library reference.

I have searched through every book I could get ahold of, hoping to find an old Fiorucci store photo with this lamp. I asked around me, but found no reference to this lamp anywhere.

Ettore Sottsass, Michele De Lucchi and Andrea Branzi have worked on Fiorruci stores.

So as a last resort I contacted the Andrea Branzi office, which kindly replied that they don’t know the lamp, that it is not a design by Andrea Branzi. They redirected me to Barbara Radice who manages the Ettore Sottsass archives. She said that she had never seen the lamp before I showed her, ...

...definitely not an Ettore Sottsass design.

Still a cool lamp considering the outrageous scale and design. But it's not by Ettore Sottsass. End of story.
