FONTANA ARTE is an Italian glass company founded in 1881 by Luigi Fontana. In 1931, the iconic Italian designer Gio Ponti became art director of the company, revolutionizing the use of glass in design by taking advantage of the recent technical progress offered by industry. Fontana Arte became a fundamental driving force of Italian industrial design. The company made history working with only the best designers of their time like Pietro Chiesa, Max Ingrand, Eugenio Gentili Tedeschi, Gae Aulenti, Sergio Asti, Livio Castiglioni, Piero Castiglioni, Vico Magistretti, Roberto Menghi. Eugenio Gentili Tedeschi (born in Italy, 1916-2005) joined Gio Ponti’s office after graduating in architecture. As a result of the rise of Mussolini’s fascism and racial laws in Italy, Eugenio family had to hide during the war. He was exposed to anti-fascism at a early age and was deeply engaged in fighting fascism in Italy. After the war he opened his own architecture company and taught at Milan Polytechnic school.
