Portrait of Alessandro Mendini at phxgallery.com

ALESSANDRO MENDINI (1931-2019) was an architect and designer, and is known for his influential work in postmodernism. He brought to the fore values that had been obscured by commercialism and functionalism. A main figure in the Radical Design movement during the 1970s, he designed important furniture such as the Lassù and Proust chairs. From 1979 he was a partner at Alchimia, working closely with Ettore Sottsass and Michele de Lucchi, while also fulfilling his role as the editor-in-chief of Domus magazine. His work in architecture has been equally ground-breaking. He is behind monumental postmodern constructions such as the Alessi Residence, the Groninger Museum and the Forum Museum of Omenga. He has collaborated with brands such as Supreme, Venini, Hermès, Cartier and Swarovski.
